OPENING OF“RHYTHMS OF REALITIES; CONZEPTUALIZED”

On November 15, RHYTHMS OF REALITIES; CONZEPTUALIZED opened its doors at ATELIER ROSHI, in Baar, Switzerland with a brief introduction by Astrid Krehan about her path into ABSTRACT.

As a scientist by education, my passion was always travel adventure and photography. Although I didn’t know much about photography, I always documented my trips with little photography stories.  Luckily the camera had an auto-mode and I was able to find the release button.

In 2011, I came across an advertisement for a photography trip to Kenya and I thought it might be a nice opportunity to learn a bit more about the technique of photography. Through this and several other trips I learned my skills for wildlife, portrait and street photography. Skills that I am trying to continuously improve and are the tools for my abstract work today.

How did I move into abstract?

In 2014 when I moved to Shanghai, I did what I always do to explore a new place and to get familiar with the culture and lifestyle, I walked the streets. Very quickly I noticed that my eyes are more drawn to the patterns and textures on facades, walls or doors than to the busy street life. These structures are representative of the lifestyle and culture in China, and I began to photograph them. During the standard post-processing, colours suddenly appeared that I didn’t see before. This made me curious and I started to play with the various parameters in an extreme way that you would never do in classic photography. An abstract appeared where the structures were complimented and balanced by the colours. I had found my language of expression…..

In the first few years, while I learned to transform the camera into a painting tool, I dedicated my work to express my feelings and fascination for Shanghai and China.

One night I grabbed my camera equipped with the biggest lens I had, a 600mm, climbed a table since the camera was so high that I couldn’t look through the view finder and moved the camera like a huge brush with the light being the paint, creating the lines in SHANGHAI LIGHTS II visualizing the energy of a city that never sleeps.

But I wanted more, I wanted to find a way to reveal the patterns and structures that appear in my mind when thinking about topics that I am passionate about and wanted to bring positive energy into your home.

I began to finetune my photographic flow into more steps, combining techniques that helped draw the images that occupied my brain.

When creating series YELLOW TREASURE, it was a call to raise awareness to the SILENT MESSAGE of nature so that we learn to listen to the nature’s voice telling us to preserve its beauty for the life of future generations.

Far before sunrise when it was still dark, we tried to find our way into the dessert that was blocked by a fence, that wasn’t there the day before, almost getting lost.  Finally after driving up and down the dunes, we found the perfect spot that allowed me to use the wind’s sculptures to create patterns that emphasize the SILENT MESSAGE of nature.”

A big thank you to ATELIER ROSHI for inviting me to her beautiful atelier and the wonderful curation of the exhibition
