DISTORTED REALITY
While capturing the footage of my introduction video in Shanghai in 2023, I came across this extraordinary sight—the undulating mirror surface at the Temple of Lights. When I observed the surface, I was mesmerized by the way it distorted the reflections of the passers-by. The playful interactions of people with their distorted reflections sparked an idea in my mind.
Inspired by the colourful patterns and the ever-changing dance of light and shadows on the mirror, I wanted to incorporate these elements into my work. As people moved past the undulating mirror, their silhouettes and the vibrant hues of their clothing created a symphony of colours and patterns. This unique display of human interaction with the mirror's distortion resonated deeply with me.
Influenced by this experience, I began to experiment with these reflections by adding my own colour patterns to the visual symphony created by the passing crowds. Draping various materials of different colours around my tripod, I put an impact on the light and shadows, revealing the transient beauty of the reflections in a dance of colours and forms. Back in my little Shanghai service apartment I reflected on the transformative power of the undulating mirror surface. This experience led me to a pivotal decision—to completely shift my artistic style from vibrant bold colours to a white background, allowing the focus to be entirely on the undulating mirror effect. In a new approach with a similar experimental setup, I began to overexpose the images to achieve such an effect.
Everything we hear is an opinion not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective not the truth.
